If we could get this group to step up and lead the way, we could all get behind them and make the impossible happen. Can it be done? Can we do it? Together – you and me? Together, can we do what seems to be impossible? Something that, if we pulled it off, would benefit thousands of people.
There is a small group of us in Fort Payne, Alabama who are stepping up, committing ourselves to make a difference in our lives and the lives of our fellow Americans. Fort Payne was once the designated “Sock Capital of the World.” A town bordering the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, located in the shadow of Lookout Mountain in the northeast corner of Alabama, Fort Payne is a city full of history. A city with a history that reflects the best in traditional American heritage, with its hustle and bustle of boom to bust to boom again.
We are the remnants of the hosiery industry which started in 1907 and grew into a cottage industry in the 50s, an industry that helped to build a town of 12,500 people in the early 2000s with over 130 sock mills. During its boom in the late 1990s, Fort Payne became the largest single location of hosiery manufacturing in America, producing millions of socks per week. Unfortunately, trade deals began to take effect and new agreements caused our manufacturing to be shipped overseas, decimating what was once the officially designated “Sock Capital of the World.”
We plan to bring it back.
We know what it takes to make socks, because we were part of those glory days of American manufacturing. We want it back for the good of the area and for the good of America. But, to get the socks back, we must have it all. We need the cotton, the fibers, the yarn makers, the yarn dyers, the technicians, and everyone else that is required to make amazing socks so that we can truly be the “Sock Capital of the World” again.
We can handle the sacrifices and heavy lifting, but we need more.

People say that the American spirit is dead. In many ways, the American Dream looks dead. There is a lot of confusion and chaos that does not line up with what we knew, what we were used to. The building blocks of our society seem to have changed. The fiber of our very civilization is blurred. We cannot feel it anymore. We cannot hear its song anymore.
So, is the American spirit dead?
You can’t kill a spirit. A spirit can go quiet. A spirit can be beat down. But spirits don’t die.
The American spirit is not dead. It is in the wind. It is in the water. It is in the rocks. It is in every heart of every American who has felt the pulse that comes from living in the greatest country in the history of the world.

Who we are
We are part of a team of dedicated individuals who have a combined total of several hundred years of experience in the sock industry. The industry itself started in the Fort Payne area around the turn of the 20th century and the original manufacturing building still stands. At one time, the whistle blew at the start of the day and at then again at the end of the day. Today, that whistle is but a distant memory. The once proud, red brick building is now an antique resale shop.
Think of that.
An antique shop in what was once a thriving, living and breathing manufacturing plant that spawned over 130 sock mills in this small town. An industry that provided jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities; an industry that was a microcosm of the history of America and the American way. An amazing story of vibrancy, personalities, ingenuity, grit, grim, and grins: and today those brick walls, which housed that thriving incubator of American exceptionalism, is an antique shop.
We here at the Made in America Sock Company remember what was, and we believe in what will be again. We can see it. We know we can do it. We know that whatever it takes, we will succeed. In the end, we will take it and make these walls sing the song of energy, the song of growth. Not the dying humdrum of death. We will make this town sing again. We will make this town live again. We will do it brick by brick until, in the light of this new day, it will crawl, it will walk, and it will run.
Brick by brick, here a little, there a little, line upon line and precept upon precept, until machines are running, people are moving, and the whistle starts blowing again, we will work.
